Macron emphasizes European preparation before resuming dialogue with Putin

French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Thursday that there is no immediate urgency to restart dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Speaking after an informal EU summit, Macron emphasized that European coordination is the current priority to ensure they are ready at the right moment. He noted that preparations are underway and it is not a matter of days before such discussions occur. Macron highlighted the need for Europeans to define their specific requests regarding security guarantees for Ukraine and the future of European security architecture. This follows Macron's December announcement of his intention to resume direct communication with the Kremlin, which had been halted due to the invasion of Ukraine. Earlier this month, a diplomatic advisor was sent to Moscow to facilitate this process. Macron concluded that the dialogue must be well-organized by Europeans and should not involve too many interlocutors to remain effective. The president reiterated that the focus remains on regional prosperity and the long-term stability of the continent.
