Munich Security Conference addresses Ukraine war and shifting transatlantic relations
The Munich Security Conference has highlighted a shift in geopolitical dynamics as the war in Ukraine enters its fifth year. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russian strikes have damaged all Ukrainian power stations, while air defense supplies often arrive at the last moment. Amid decreasing US military aid since 2025, European allies are increasing their support through new mechanisms, though long-term sustainability remains a concern. US President Donald Trump has urged Zelenskyy to reach an agreement ahead of upcoming trilateral negotiations in Geneva involving the US, Russia, and Ukraine. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the conference, though his public speech omitted direct references to the conflict. Zelenskyy also held meetings with European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and representatives from the defense industry. Discussions at the conference also touched upon British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's proposal for a "European NATO" and the broader strategic autonomy of Europe.
