Donald Trump's defamation lawsuit against BBC scheduled for trial in 2027
A federal judge in Florida has scheduled a trial for February 2027 regarding Donald Trump's $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC. The U.S. President alleges that the British broadcaster's Panorama documentary used misleading edits of his January 6, 2021, speech to falsely suggest he directly encouraged the Capitol riot. Trump is seeking $5 billion for defamation and an additional $5 billion for unfair trade practices. The BBC has issued an apology for the editing of the footage but maintains there is no legal basis for the lawsuit, arguing the program was not broadcast in the United States. Following the legal developments, BBC Director General Tim Davie and head of BBC News Deborah Turness recently resigned. BBC Chairman Samir Shah also sent a letter to Trump expressing regret over the editing while contesting the legal grounds for damages. The network intends to file a motion to dismiss the case by March 17, 2026. The trial in Miami is expected to last approximately two weeks.
