Daniel Podence handed one-match suspension for umbrella-throwing incident
Daniel Podence, the 30-year-old Portuguese winger for Olympiacos, has been sanctioned with a one-match suspension by the First-instance Single-member Disciplinary Body. The decision follows an incident during the AEK vs. Olympiacos match on February 1, 2026, at Allwyn Arena, where Podence threw an umbrella back into the stands. Video evidence submitted by AEK showed the player returning the object after it was initially thrown at him by home supporters. In addition to the match ban, the disciplinary body imposed a fine of 80 euros. This ruling follows a separate 10,000-euro fine issued against the player by the Permanent Committee for Countering Violence (DEAB) for the same conduct. During the hearing, Olympiacos legal counsel Dimitris Karpetopoulos argued that the video was edited and that Podence's action was a purely reflexive response. The defense also requested the charges be dismissed on legal grounds, citing that the player should not be punished twice for the same incident. The suspension is to be served immediately, meaning Podence will miss the upcoming Saturday match against Levadiakos.
