Medical error in Italy: 2-year-old child critical after heart transplant with damaged organ
A two-year-old boy named Tommaso is in critical condition at Monaldi Hospital in Naples following a heart transplant involving a damaged organ. The heart was transported from Bolzano, but dry ice was used for preservation instead of standard ice, resulting in significant damage. Despite this error, the surgical team proceeded with the transplantation. The child is currently in a pharmacological coma, and health complications have extended to his liver. His mother, Patrizia, has issued an urgent appeal for a new donor organ as his survival chances diminish hourly. Two separate prosecutorial investigations have been launched into the incident to determine why the damaged organ was used. Consequently, two doctors at Monaldi Hospital have been temporarily suspended from their duties. The hospital was previously recognized for its success in complex transplant procedures.
