SEK calls on EU leaders to protect labor standards in Brussels meeting
The Cyprus Workers' Confederation (SEK) has issued an appeal to European leaders meeting in Brussels for a summit on European Industrial Policy. As a member of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), SEK addressed Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and other officials to oppose policies that could downgrade labor standards. The organization warns against efforts by business lobbies to reduce wages and worsen working conditions through the proposed 28th company regime approach. SEK argues that European competitiveness should be boosted through productive investment and skills training rather than labor cost reductions. The confederation specifically highlights the importance of research, innovation, and technology education for the workforce. It cautions that further deregulation and cuts to public spending could erode the European social model and damage national economies. According to the statements, maintaining high labor standards is essential for the long-term resilience of the European Union.
