Loukas Fourlas reports poor conditions at Rizokarpaso school to EU institutions
Cypriot MEP Loukas Fourlas has addressed a formal letter to European Union institutions regarding the deteriorating conditions at the Rizokarpaso school in the northern part of Cyprus. Fourlas describes the environment as unacceptable, citing leaking roofs, drafty windows, and muddy grounds where students attend classes. He highlights that since 2021, Turkish authorities have prohibited the Republic of Cyprus school board from conducting necessary maintenance on the building. The MEP argues that these conditions violate fundamental EU values and the safety standards required for European citizens. He identifies Turkey, as the occupying power, as being legally responsible for ensuring safe educational facilities. Fourlas urges the EU to take immediate action rather than offering symbolic support to the enclaved students. He emphasizes that the current state of abandonment treats these students as second-class citizens. The letter calls for the EU to uphold its principles and protect the rights of its citizens.
