Cyprus district organizations announce water pressure reductions due to shortages
The Cyprus Water Development Department has mandated a 10% reduction in water supply to District Local Government Organizations (EOA) due to severe water scarcity. Starting February 24, 2026, the Larnaca District Administration (EOAL) will implement reduced water pressure across its network to rationalize usage. Consumers are legally required to maintain water storage tanks with a minimum capacity of 800 litres per unit. In apartment buildings, systems must include ground-level storage and functional pumps to supply individual rooftop tanks. Similar measures are expected in Nicosia and Limassol, where officials warn of increased infrastructure strain. Nicosia EOA President Konstantinos Yiorkadjis estimated that the pressure fluctuations could increase network faults by 30% and non-revenue water by 5%. The financial impact for Nicosia alone is projected at 2.8 million euros in the first year and up to 6.2 million euros over three years due to repairs and lost revenue. Authorities urge the public to ensure all pumping and storage systems are fully operational before the measures take effect.
