Cyprus private hospitals threaten to suspend operations over severe nursing shortages
The Cyprus Private Hospitals Association (PASIN) and the Employers’ and Industrialists’ Federation (OEV) have warned of potential strikes and clinic closures due to a critical shortage of nursing staff. PASIN President Marios Karaiskakis stated that hospitals are operating at their limits and accused the government of failing to fulfill promises made during a meeting on December 22. Proposed legislative changes to facilitate the hiring of foreign nurses were reportedly blocked by trade unions, leading the Ministry of Health to commission a new study instead of taking immediate action. Karaiskakis highlighted a regulatory discrepancy where foreign graduates from Cypriot nursing schools require a master's degree to work, unlike their local counterparts. The OEV has authorized its members to take measures, including the possible suspension of operations, citing concerns over patient safety and the viability of the healthcare system. Potential consequences include the postponement of surgeries and longer waiting lists within the General Healthcare System (Gesy).
