Greek Cypriot man detained in northern Cyprus for alleged military zone breach

A Greek Cypriot man was detained on Tuesday afternoon while gathering wild greens near the buffer zone in the Gerolakkos area. Authorities in the Republic of Cyprus are currently taking steps to secure his release as soon as possible. According to Turkish Cypriot media, the man was intercepted around 4:00 PM and subsequently appeared before a military court. He also appeared before a district court in northern Nicosia on suspicion of illegal possession and transport of explosives. Reports indicate that 16 12-gauge hunting cartridges from government-controlled areas were found in his vehicle during a search. Police requested he be remanded in custody to guarantee his future appearance in court. Prosecution lawyer Ali Yegen stated that charges include both illegal entry into a restricted zone and the transport of explosives. Judge Sevket Gazi ordered the man to be held at a central prison for up to four days pending the investigation. The incident occurred while the individual was reportedly searching for wild asparagus or greens.
