Dead beaked whale washed ashore in Akanthou
A dead male beaked whale, approximately five meters long and weighing an estimated 1.5 tonnes, was discovered on a rocky shoreline in Akanthou on Tuesday afternoon. While one report identified the mammal as a rorqual, the majority of sources specified it as a beaked whale. Teams from a wildlife rehabilitation center based in Vouno were mobilized to manage the animal's removal and transport. Kemal Basat, the director of the center, noted that the timing of this incident is close to a mass stranding that occurred three years ago involving 13 beaked whales. Due to the rocky and inaccessible nature of the location, recovery efforts were described as intensive and ongoing. Once the carcass is successfully moved to the center's facilities, a necropsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. Local authorities emphasized the need for swift removal to prevent potential environmental hazards.
