Historical milestones of the Cyprus national football team in February
The Cyprus national football team celebrates two significant historical milestones occurring in February. On February 14, 1973, Cyprus achieved its first-ever victory in a World Cup qualifying round by defeating Northern Ireland 1-0 at the GSP Stadium. The winning goal was scored by Kokos Antoniou in the 88th minute following a pass from Pampoullis, under the guidance of coach Pampos Avraamidis. A decade later, on February 12, 1983, Cyprus secured a notable 1-1 draw against the reigning world champions, Italy, during the Euro 1984 qualifiers at Tsirion Stadium. Nikos Mavris opened the score for Cyprus in the 47th minute, while Francesco Graziani equalized for Italy in the 58th minute. This match provided Cyprus with its first point in Group 5, which also included Romania, Czechoslovakia, and Sweden. The 1983 team was led by Bulgarian coach Vasil Spasov and featured key players such as Andreas Constantinou and Giannakis Giagoudakis. Both events remain landmark achievements in the history of Cypriot international football.
