Jolie originally revealed her medical status in a May 2013 New York Times op-ed titled "My Medical Choice," noting she carries the BRCA1 gene mutation. This mutation significantly increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Her mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, died in 2007 at age 56 after a long battle with cancer. Jolie expressed gratitude for the ability to take proactive health measures, emphasizing that her choices were driven by the desire to live a full life.
