Karate coach found guilty of sexual exploitation of minor in Nicosia

The Nicosia Assize Court has found a karate coach guilty of the sexual exploitation of a minor. The legal proceedings were conducted behind closed doors to protect the victim, and the final sentencing date will be announced following a mitigation hearing. Defense arguments for a reduction in the sentence have been scheduled for February 18. This case gained significant public attention in June 2025 when it was revealed that the defendant participated in a public school event regarding sports values while the trial was already underway. During the same period, the coach continued to operate his own private karate school. Following the public outcry, relevant authorities claimed they were unaware that the individual was a defendant, suggesting he was a last-minute replacement for the event. Reports indicate that an anonymous complaint regarding the individual had been filed as early as 2022. Additionally, instructions had previously been issued to sports federations to prevent contact between minors and individuals facing serious criminal charges.
