Cyprus reports 4.5% GDP growth as President presents competitiveness proposals at EU summit
According to data from the Statistical Service (Cystat), Cyprus recorded a GDP growth rate of 4.5% in the fourth quarter of 2025. President Nikos Christodoulides stated that this figure represents the second-highest growth rate in the European Union. On February 12, 2026, the President attended an informal EU summit at Alden Biesen Castle in Belgium focused on enhancing European competitiveness and strategic autonomy. During the summit, he presented eight specific proposals from the Republic of Cyprus aimed at achieving measurable results with clear timelines. The discussions included contributions from former Italian Prime Ministers Mario Draghi and Enrico Letta regarding the deepening of the Single Market and capital markets union. Christodoulides noted that the country's economic performance allows for increased public investment in health, education, and social welfare. The summit was convened following a joint initiative by 22 member states to address global geo-economic competition. Government sources indicated that Nicosia seeks tangible progress on files affecting European businesses and citizens.
