Russian strikes on Kyiv disrupt heating as Ukraine hits Russian military facility
On February 12, 2026, Russian forces launched a massive missile and drone attack against Kyiv’s energy infrastructure and residential areas. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the strikes, involving ballistic missiles, left approximately 2,600 additional buildings without heating and resulted in seven injuries. These attacks brought the total number of educational facilities without heat to 315, which represents roughly 30% of the city's schools and kindergartens. To manage the crisis during sub-zero temperatures, authorities plan to temporarily merge school complexes so that approximately 110,000 students can continue in-person learning. Simultaneously, Ukrainian missiles targeted a Russian Ministry of Defense facility near the village of Kotluban in the Volgograd region. Governor Andrei Bocharov stated that the strike caused a fire at the military site, prompting the emergency evacuation of local residents to prevent casualties. While the Kyiv strikes hit apartment buildings on both banks of the Dnipro River, the Russian official reported no civilian casualties from the Kotluban strike. Each of Kyiv's three major power plants has reportedly sustained damage from repeated attacks over the course of the conflict.
