EU defence ministers discuss Ukraine support and security architecture in Brussels
Cyprus Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas attended the Informal EU Foreign Affairs Council for defense ministers in Brussels on February 11, 2026. The session prioritized EU support for Ukraine against ongoing attacks on its energy and civilian infrastructure, highlighting the need for enhanced air defense. Discussions covered defense industry cooperation and funding, notably a 90 billion euro interest-free loan previously agreed upon by the European Council. Financing options included mobilizing private capital and utilizing resources from the European Investment Bank. Ministers examined expanding the European Union Military Assistance Mission (EUMAM) to boost the operational capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This involves upgrading training infrastructure in coordination with the "Coalition of the Willing." The meeting also addressed security perspectives for 2026, focusing on adapting the European security architecture to changing geopolitical conditions. Minister Palmas reaffirmed that supporting Ukraine remains a key priority for Cyprus and the EU.
