Greek and Cypriot foreign ministers discuss diplomacy following Mitsotakis-Erdogan meeting
Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis and Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos held a telephone conversation to discuss the Cyprus issue and regional developments. This communication occurred following a high-level meeting in Ankara between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Gerapetritis described the summit as a strategic effort to establish a functional relationship and maintain open communication channels to reduce geopolitical tensions. During an interview with ERT, Gerapetritis emphasized that the policy of "calm waters" with Turkey does not involve any concessions or sacrifices regarding Greek-Cypriot interests or the planned electricity interconnection. He also reaffirmed Greece's support for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, in their efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem. Greece, as an elected member of the UN Security Council, collaborated with the Republic of Cyprus to secure a 12-month renewal of the UN mandate for the peacekeeping force. The ministers highlighted the importance of diplomatic mobility and keeping the Cyprus issue high on the international agenda. Gerapetritis concluded that the diplomatic strategy is designed to decompress tensions in a complex geopolitical environment.
