Illegal waste dumping and title deed delays in Mouttagiaka refugee settlement
Nikos Kettiros, Chairman of the Refugee Committee and AKEL MP, has raised concerns regarding illegal construction waste dumping in the Mouttagiaka region of Limassol. A waste mound approximately 150 meters high has accumulated above the refugee settlement, posing a significant risk of mudslides during heavy rainfall. Local residents have reportedly expressed fear of reporting the activity due to suspected involvement of organized crime elements. Although up to 10 trucks have been observed transporting waste through the village in organized operations, police allegedly claimed they lacked available vehicles to investigate. In addition to environmental concerns, the committee discussed long-standing delays in issuing title deeds for residential phases G, E, and Th. The Land Registry confirmed that units built on Turkish-Cypriot land will receive lease certificates once the titling process is finalized. Overlapping land plots caused by historical construction errors are also being addressed through a new procedure agreed upon by the Planning Department and relevant services. Similar title deed issues were identified in the areas of Polemidia and Dromolaxia.
