European Parliament approves common list of safe countries for asylum applications
The European Parliament has approved two amendments to EU asylum regulations aimed at accelerating application processing and improving system efficiency. A key feature is the creation of a unified EU-level list of safe countries of origin, which includes Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, Kosovo, India, Morocco, and Tunisia. Under these new rules, asylum seekers from these designated countries must now personally prove they face a specific risk of persecution or serious harm upon return. Candidate countries for EU membership will also be considered safe by default, unless specific exceptions such as widespread violence or high asylum recognition rates occur. The European Commission is tasked with monitoring developments in these countries and can propose temporary suspensions or removals from the list. Member states retain the authority to maintain their own national lists of safe countries alongside the EU list. Additionally, the concept of a safe third country allows member states to declare applications inadmissible if a substantial link exists between the applicant and that country. This initiative seeks to harmonize asylum procedures across all member states and streamline the legal framework.
