Cyprus Foreign Minister discusses strategic role and EU-US relations in Washington interview
In an interview with Breitbart News in Washington, Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos stated that U.S. President Donald Trump holds a unique position to shape the global order and international developments. Kombos emphasized that the European Union should be viewed as a partner rather than a rival, highlighting potential for growth in trade, migration management, and connectivity. He positioned Cyprus as a strategic 'entry point' and mediator between the EU, the United States, and the Middle East, citing the island's strong relations with Israel and the Arab world. The Foreign Minister noted that Cyprus will assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026, which will allow it to coordinate on critical issues like transatlantic relations and the Iran crisis. The discussion also addressed the strategic importance of India and the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). Kombos acknowledged that while no sitting U.S. President has visited Cyprus, vice-presidential visits have occurred in the past.
