Investigation into missing 13.6kg of TNT from National Guard firing range

Approximately 13.5 to 13.6 kilograms of TNT explosive material have been missing from the Kalo Chorio firing range in Larnaca province for nearly two weeks following a National Guard exercise. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that an internal military investigation is currently underway and is expected to conclude within the coming week. A parallel criminal investigation is being conducted by the Cyprus Police, with the Ministry expressing full confidence in their efforts to locate the materials. Preliminary findings suggest potential negligence or disciplinary offenses by National Guard personnel due to a lack of supervision during the exercise. The opposition party AKEL has criticized the government for a lack of transparency and questioned why no officials have been suspended given the possibility of an inside job. Minister of Defence Vasilis Palmas has reportedly ordered the swift completion of the internal report being prepared by a senior army officer. Authorities have emphasized that the results of both investigations will be made public once established procedures are completed. While some reports cite confidence from officials that the explosives will be found, no arrests have been made as of yet.
