Controversy surrounds Cyprus's Eurovision 2026 entry Jalla following public outcry
A significant controversy has erupted in Cyprus over the selection of the song "Jalla" by artist Antigoni for the Eurovision 2026 song contest. On February 10, a group of prominent figures including academics, journalists, and artists sent an open letter to the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC/RIK) demanding the song's withdrawal. The critics argue that the music video portrays humiliating imagery, lacks aesthetic value, and ignores local traditions. Specific concerns were raised regarding scenes of motorcyclists performing stunts without helmets, which critics claim promote dangerous road behavior. CyBC Director General Thanasis Tsokos defended the selection, citing a strategic partnership with major Greek record labels and a 35-year history in the contest. However, Tsokos later acknowledged responsibility for the visual content and stated that corrections would be made to the video clip. Deputy Minister of Culture Lina (Vasiliki) Kassianidou expressed personal dislike for the song but noted that the final decision rests with the state broadcaster.
