Larnaca court fines glass company €18,000 for fatal workplace accident

The Larnaca District Court has imposed a fine of €18,000 on the company MA.STA.I. GLASS MARKET LTD following a fatal workplace accident. The legal proceedings were initiated by the Department of Labour Inspection of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance. The court found that the company violated Occupational Safety and Health Regulations of 2021 as well as safety laws spanning from 1996 to 2020. These violations led to the fatal injury of an employee and placed other staff and individuals at risk. Specifically, the employer failed to implement a safe methodology for moving a glass plate. During the operation, the glass shattered and the resulting shards caused fatal injuries to the worker. Additionally, the company failed to establish necessary protective measures based on a written risk assessment for such tasks. The court highlighted that risks were not identified in a timely manner, and there was a lack of an adequate risk management system. This ruling emphasizes the legal consequences for failing to maintain workplace safety standards.
