Justice Minister discusses crime prevention while doctors report GHS system failures
Minister of Justice Kostas Fytiris held separate meetings with political leaders on Tuesday and Wednesday to address organized crime and public safety. EDEK President Nikos Anastasiou proposed the formation of a special anti-crime unit and discussed the construction of a new prison facility. DISY President Annita Demetriou expressed support for measures such as asset forfeiture and surveillance bills, while specifically calling for the installation of CCTV on busy roads. Simultaneously, a survey by the Cyprus Medical Association involving 728 doctors revealed systemic issues with the General Healthcare System (GHS) software. The findings show that 91% of participants experience weekly interruptions lasting one to four hours, leading to significant delays in patient care. While 46% of doctors view the system's usability positively, 80% report being forced to work overtime due to technical failures. The medical association has demanded that the Health Insurance Organization provide an immediate and permanent solution to these performance issues. These dual developments highlight significant legislative and infrastructure challenges currently facing Cyprus.
