Global events mark the first official UNESCO World Greek Language Day
On February 9, 2026, the first official World Greek Language Day was celebrated globally following its declaration by UNESCO during the 43rd General Conference in November 2025. In Cyprus, the Greek Embassy, the University of Cyprus, and the Ministry of Education organized an event featuring participation from students and religious leaders. Archbishop Georgios and the President of Cyprus emphasized the role of the Greek language in national identity and education. Simultaneously, the Permanent Representation of Greece to the United Nations hosted a discussion at the UN headquarters in New York. Ambassador Aglaia Balta highlighted the language's contribution to international dialogue, linking it to the motto "Dialogue, Diplomacy, Democracy." The event at the UN addressed the historical continuity of the language and its function as a bridge of understanding between cultures. In Nicosia, the Greek Ambassador stated that Cyprus was the most appropriate location for the first international celebration. All speakers underscored the necessity of preserving the language through modern education and daily usage among the younger generation.
