Cyprus Justice Minister announces comprehensive measures against organized crime
Cypriot Minister of Justice and Public Order Costas Fytiris has announced a new strategic offensive against organized crime, emphasizing a policy of zero tolerance. The initiative focuses on dismantling the leadership of criminal factions by utilizing European legislation for the seizure and confiscation of unjustified assets, which can be applied even without a prior criminal conviction. Key components of the plan include the creation of a new autonomous investigative body modeled after the FBI and the establishment of an independent Coast Guard. To address institutional gaps, the government is prioritizing a bill on legal surveillance and wiretapping before the dissolution of Parliament. Regarding correctional facilities, a new prison system with a 1,250-person capacity is planned to be built outside urban areas within the next five years. Fytiris also confirmed that authorities are evaluating information provided by Ioanna Fotiou ("Annie Alexui") concerning her experiences with organized crime. Additionally, the Fire Service will be reinforced with drones and specialized equipment for managing wildfires. The minister acknowledged the public's heightened sense of insecurity and the impact of corruption allegations circulating on social media.
