Cyprus evaluates US invitation to February 19 summit on Gaza reconstruction
The Republic of Cyprus is evaluating an invitation from the U.S. President to participate in a special summit on February 19, 2026, focused on the reconstruction of Gaza. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that the invitation was received on February 7 and that the government has requested clarifications regarding the summit's specific goals before making a final decision. The discussion is expected to center on the second phase of President Trump’s 20-point peace plan. Cyprus supports the plan provided it remains within the framework of international law and United Nations resolutions, specifically citing Article 28.03. Since only selected EU member states and third countries were invited, a unified European stance is not anticipated. Cyprus is coordinating with EU partners while considering its current role as the presiding country of the South-East European Cooperation Process. Separately, President Christodoulides discussed the Cyprus issue with the Greek Prime Minister ahead of the latter's meeting with President Erdogan in Ankara. Regarding the Annie Alexiou case, the spokesperson noted that the matter is being handled institutionally by the Ministry of Justice and relevant authorities.
