Paphos that resisted: Memory and truth through the book of Antonis Assos
The new book by journalist Antonis Assos was presented in Paphos, shedding light on lesser-known aspects of Cypriot history in 1974. The work focuses on the popular uprising of September 8, which erupted following the assassination of police officer Demosthenes Georgiou by coup elements. The mass reaction of citizens and the transport of the victim's coffin to the police station forced the leadership of the time to restore constitutional order. The book describes how Paphos managed to shake off the control of armed groups that terrorized the region following the July coup. Furthermore, it highlights events such as the temporary occupation of the Paphos Metropolis and the actions of resistance members during that period. The event featured speeches from prominent figures, honoring the memory of those who fought for democracy in Cyprus.
