Arrests made in Dubai following attempted assassination of Russian General Alekseyev

On February 6, 2026, Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, the First Deputy Head of Russia's GRU, was shot and seriously wounded at an apartment building on Volokolamskoye Highway in Moscow. The assailant, reportedly posing as a delivery worker, fired multiple shots with a silenced Makarov pistol, striking Alekseyev in the limb and chest. Following surgery, medical sources reported the general has regained consciousness and his life is no longer in danger. Russian authorities, specifically the FSB, announced the arrest of a primary suspect identified as 64-year-old Lyubomir Korba, who was detained in Dubai and subsequently extradited to Russia. A second suspect was also reportedly arrested as an accomplice, while a third allegedly fled to Ukraine. The FSB stated that the suspects confessed to acting under the direction of Ukrainian intelligence services, a claim Russia's Foreign Ministry linked to efforts to sabotage peace negotiations. Ukraine has officially denied any involvement in the assassination attempt, dismissing the accusations. Russian President Vladimir Putin personally thanked UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for the cooperation of local law enforcement in the investigation.
