Japan: 45 dead from heavy snowfall – Over 500 injured

Japan is currently facing a severe winter crisis as heavy snowfall has resulted in at least 45 deaths and over 500 injuries. According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, the Niigata prefecture has been hit hardest, reporting 17 fatalities. Most of the deaths occurred as residents fell while attempting to clear heavy snow from their roofs or surrounding property. This winter season has brought significant disruption to 15 of the country's 47 prefectures, with snow levels reaching two meters in certain locations. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting further heavy snow for western and northern coastal regions over the coming weekend. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant regarding traffic disruptions and potential avalanche risks in the affected areas.
