Panayiotou: Consultation for retroactive fees for farmers, no accumulated burdens
Minister of Agriculture Maria Panayiotou assured that consultations with agricultural organizations will take place regarding retroactive environmental fees for boreholes. These fees stem from a technocratic delay dating back to 2017 rather than the introduction of a new tax. The government is focused on establishing a settlement methodology to prevent farmers from facing excessive financial pressure. In response to water scarcity, a robust plan involving 200 million euros in infrastructure and new desalination plants is currently under development. Panayiotou emphasized that while long-term security until 2050 is a priority, immediate action such as a 10% reduction in water use is necessary. The Minister clarified that no water cuts are currently being implemented, but rational consumption remains vital for sustainable management.
