Pissarides: Artificial Intelligence is changing work, but not in the way we fear
In a lecture at the University of Cyprus, Nobel laureate Christopher Pissarides addressed the global debate on Artificial Intelligence and its impact on the labor market. He argued that AI is transforming jobs rather than eliminating them, drawing parallels to previous industrial revolutions throughout history. The primary challenge lies in the smooth transition and adaptation of workers through education and lifelong learning. Human skills like critical thinking, decision-making, and emotional intelligence remain irreplaceable and are not threatened by automation. Generative AI allows employees to spend less time on routine tasks and focus more on creativity and coordination. Ultimately, the speaker views AI as a capability enhancer that can significantly boost productivity when integrated correctly into the workforce.
