Study begins for the conservation of Saint George of the Greeks in Famagusta

Work has officially commenced on a study regarding the conservation and maintenance of the Saint George of the Greeks church in Famagusta. This announcement was shared on social media by Sotos Ktoris, the Greek Cypriot co-chair of the Bi-communal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage. Dating back to the 14th century, the structure represents the largest Greek Orthodox church built during the Frankish period in Cyprus. The architectural style is unique for its era, blending a Gothic-style basilica with traditional Byzantine domed elements. Located within the walled city of Famagusta, the church stands near the historic Saint Nicholas Cathedral, also known as the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque. The building features walls made of squared sandstone and is divided into three aisles by two rows of sturdy stone columns.
