Years pass and loans are "bequeathed" to children

The advanced age and limited financial resources of many borrowers in Cyprus have created a situation where children are increasingly taking over their parents' loan repayments. KEDIPES Chairman Lambros Papadopoulos noted that the non-performing loan issue started in 2008, meaning the problem has persisted for nearly two decades. This generational shift was highlighted during the presentation of the company's performance for the second half of 2025. The presentation focused on two specific repayment schemes offering significant discounts based on the property or loan value. So far, these schemes have resolved 300 million euros in non-performing loans, resulting in collections of approximately 80 million euros. KEDIPES plans to extend these initiatives into 2026 to continue addressing the long-standing debt issues within the country.
