Reaction from the European Commission regarding the potential creation of NBA Europe

European Commissioner for Sport Glenn Micallef has voiced the Commission's concerns regarding the potential establishment of an NBA Europe league. Responding to an inquiry from MEP Carolina Morace, he warned about the negative consequences that closed or semi-closed leagues could have on the European sports model. Micallef emphasized the importance of protecting domestic championships, the principle of sporting merit, and solidarity mechanisms for amateur sports. He also pointed out economic risks, specifically mentioning the potential for capital flight to third countries and the erosion of the tax base. The Commission maintains that while sports federations are autonomous, they must strictly adhere to the European Union's legal framework. This reaction comes as plans for a semi-closed league involving twelve permanent members are being discussed for the 2027-2028 season.
