Water investments are a critical component of European security, said Commissioner Roswall
European Commissioner Jessika Roswall emphasized that investments in water, soil, and biodiversity are vital components of European security during her meeting with Cyprus parliamentary committees. She highlighted that water adequacy and quality can no longer be taken for granted, necessitating the full implementation of EU water legislation. The Commissioner welcomed the planned regional firefighting hub in Cyprus, underscoring the importance of prevention and preparedness against forest fires. Discussions also focused on the circular economy, which currently accounts for only 12% of the EU economy, as a tool for reducing dependencies and boosting competitiveness. Cypriot lawmakers raised concerns regarding the severe drought, the impacts of the climate crisis on primary production, and potential cuts to agricultural funding. Ultimately, Roswall stressed that environmental restoration and resource management must be addressed holistically in the Union's future budget planning.
