Alarm in the Marmara Sea: Earthquake above 7 on the Richter scale threatens Istanbul and 10 other provinces, warns Turkish seismologist
Turkish seismologist Professor Haluk Eyidogan warned about the severe consequences of a major earthquake in the Sea of Marmara. He stated that an earthquake exceeding 7 on the Richter scale would affect not only Istanbul but also a wide area including up to ten provinces with coastlines on the Sea of Marmara. He emphasized the importance of addressing urban planning errors, lack of geotechnical controls and avoiding construction in areas with soil liquefaction or landslide risks. Prevention, proper soil selection, and strict construction controls are crucial to minimize losses in a future Marmara earthquake.
