EuroCOP: Police tensions undermine Cyprus’ EU council presidency
The European police confederation, EuroCOP, has formally warned EU leaders about a significant breakdown in social dialogue within the Cyprus police force. In a letter addressed to top officials, the confederation highlighted a refusal by the Cypriot police chief to engage in meaningful negotiations with the Isotita union. These tensions are reportedly characterized by a lack of communication and alleged threats against union members, which EuroCOP deems incompatible with European standards. The organization argues that this situation is particularly critical as Cyprus currently holds the presidency of the EU Council, potentially undermining the Union’s commitment to social rights. EuroCOP warns that the lack of government intervention and the resulting institutional dysfunction could negatively impact public safety and the security of visiting delegates.
